Gates to the City of Rothenburg
The walls vary in appearance and roam over the hills but always provide a challenge to
walking. The view from the wall out over the river valley is fantastic.

Rothenburg, Germany
Known as the medieval city on the Romantic
Road, Rothenburg is at the end of a railroad spur. The regional train comes a minimum of half a dozen times a day and unloads the
tourists that the city thrives on.
The city is high on the hillsides and
overlooks the Tabor river. Trails into the countryside start here so it is an attractive
place for the hikers through Europe. Cars are allowed inside (usually) and pedestrians
wander over the cobblestone streets seeking interesting places. The German Criminal museum
is here as well as the StadtMuseum.
The entire wall surrounding the city is
intact so you can walk along and peer through the
weapon slits in the wall out into the surrounding countryside. If you decide to get a room there are many places inside the walls.
However you can also stay outside the walls.
Wrought iron is prevalent along the
streets. This is as you might expect for blacksmithing and ironworks were an important industry of the medieval times. The
church on the left is St Jakob's and this church offers tours. Like all tours in the off
season they were only open for a couple of hours a day so I was not able to see inside.
But the pictures they have for sale show the alter to be of beautiful wood.
The tourists buy up the local food specialty
"Schneeballen". In
various coverings of chocolate or powdered sugar, it is a deep fried dough shaped into a
ball.
