A Morning
walk
It is great fun to walk in the Rothenburg
area. Even on a wintry morning with the snow drifting down, it is more than refreshing.
Strike out of town to the south past the Spital Bastion (1537-1611). It has 7 gates and
two outer courtyards. If you like you can walk beneath in the moat area and very quickly
will understand why this fortress was unconquerable.
Rolling hillsides and the river on your
right lead you into the countryside.
On the inside you can see the
"manhole" which allowed entrance (or exit) one person at a time
into the fort courtyard. Of course, this was easily defended, the enemy could be exterminated at close range one at a time. Hot
oil, tar or water could also act as a deterrent. Medieval times were such a kick.

Winter Wonderland
The fortifications around the town have wonderful
form and functionality. Doorways are curved (Can't shoot an arrow around a corner) and the
walls thick and high.
Street to the west and the Burgtor - Castle Gate
To the west the gardens hang out over the river
valley. Exit the fortifications through the double walls and you find a relaxing area to
browse. This Burgtor (gate) to the city is of the year 1360. Here again you can see single
person gates and slots from which to pour hot liquids.
