Das Augsburger Rathaus

During the war the town hall (Rathaus) was destroyed almost entirely by the bombing of August 1944. Although the outer walls withstood the attacks, the structure still had to be reconstructed and this has been continuing since the war.

The area outside and in front of the city hall is the Rathausplatz which has been the center of the city for 1000 years. Originally it was triangular in shape and was called the Eiermarkt (Egg Market) but later in the 19th century became the "Ludwigsplatz" in honor of the Bavarian King Ludwig (Louis) the First. For the past 300 years and today the plaza is the site of the Christkindlesmarkt held during Advent

Recently the interior Rathaus and its great Gold Room (Goldener Saal) was opened for public view.  The Gold Room is fantastic.

The central panel is 24 square meters and shows "Sapientia" (Wisdom) embodied in the figure of a woman in sumptuous clothing with a crown and a sceptre. She is enthroned on a triumphal car which is drawn by sages and scolars of law.

From the Perlach tower next to the Rathaus you can see all of Augsburg and it overlooks the square below. In the photo they are preparing for the Christmas market held in the plaza square.
